What is Thanksgiving?

Print

Thanksgiving  is basically a harvest festival celebrated mainly in Canada and USA.  It originated with the pilgrims when they had a feast marking their first harvest. It  is a  time for people to give thanks to God for everything.   Canadians celebrate Thanksgiving the second Monday of October while Americans cebrate the 4th Thursday  of November. During this time families get together and enjoy  a feast  together,  and on the menu of course is Turkey.

So Thanksgiving is next week and i will be cooking. Here’s what’s on our Thanksgiving menu:

Turkey and stuffing
Mashed potatoes and gravy
corn on the cob
Rice Pilau
Chapati
Dairy Free Green Bean Casserole
Pumpkin Pie and  strawberry – kiwi fruit pie
African Salad (Kachumbari) and fruit salad
and of course cranberry sauce

I know for a fact  i am going to pig out this thanksgiving!  All the pounds i have lost so far will come right back up and am ok with that.

Hope you will get to celebrate this thanksgiving with your loved ones.

Happy Friday!

More Reasons to drink Water…

Print

Are you getting enough water? I am not talking about sodas, juice, tea or coffee, just plain water. Our bodies are made of about 60% water, so as the days go by we lose  the water in our bodies and naturally we will need to replenish that.  I was really bad about drinking water,i think i started drinking water when i got pregnant, and that was to get rid of that yucky taste in my mouth. I would add a freshly squeezed lemon and little did i know, i was drinking water throughout the day.

Experts recommend drinking at least 8 – 8oz glasses of water a day, and actually others are saying depending with how much you exercise and other health factors you may need more than 8 glasses a day.  So why do you need to drink water ?

  • Water helps your body get rid of toxins and waste through your digestive tract.
  • Water helps you with digestion and absorbing helpful nutrients in your body
  • Helps you burn fat, yep.  Helps raise the oxygen levels in your bloodstream, so you body can use that up to burn fat  for energy
  • Keeps you energized throughout the day. The more water you have in your body, the less fatigue you will feel in the day.
  • Water will keep you alive; i mean you can’t go on without it.
  • Have a headache? Drink water,  it works same thing for joint pains
  • Plus helps with your short term memory.

There are tons of benefits of why you should drink water and if you are the type that can’t seem to drink just plain water…add  freshly sliced limes, lemons or oranges for taste and  just drink on.

If you want to know if you are drinking enough water… check out  the color of your urine. If it is clear, you are drinking too much water, cut a little bit. If it is pale yellow you are on the right track, but if it is dark then you aren’t getting enough water and start drinking a little more.

Goodnight and have a glass of water.

Rainy Sunday in KC

Print

It  rained most of the day here in Kansas City, but that is ok…The Chiefs won their second game against the Raiders, and yeah without Larry Johnson too!  I was just watching the highlights for the Colts vs Patriots game, man i should have watched that game…Now that is football, when you have the best of the best QB and players truly  bring their A-Game, now that is sports worth watching!

Well, back to mommyhood…  Let’s just say Eli realized mommy was home the whole day and he was going to use that time to his advantage. My little munchkin nursed the whole day, and didn’t take much of a nap, till he crashed at 9:30 pm. I just hope this will be one of those nights i can say, my baby slept through the night!

Julian did so well this weekend too, and am truly proud of him. He  got to show me all the new words he has learned through the week and is becoming quite the master in the concept of sharing… If you are planning on having kids  know this, sharing is a hard thing for children to really learn and practice. I mean, you will be teaching them and reminding them day in day out.  Every toy that is in the house is theirs ” is mine”  as they say it.   Julian has been sharing with us and the baby too, so that is really great.

well, i better go to sleep. goodnight.

Children know a lot more…

Print

Seriously, your children may know and understand nore about you and things around  than you realize. Julian wakes up early every morning some days around 5:30, usually he will jump in our  bed with us and if Eli is in our bed then and not in his crib, his dad would take Julian back to his room and most times  he would  fall asleep in Julian’s bed till they wake up again.

This morning Julian came to our room asked for milk. His dad woke up  with him, but they went back to  his room. I walked down the hall way trying to burp Eli  and i hear them chat and then there was silence and i hear Julian start making thing sounds aloud aaaaarrr huuuuh aaaarrrr huuuuuh aaaaarrrr huuuuh…Then it hit me, his dad snores,  he was imitating his dad, i guess he was expecting his dad to start snoring soon.  I pushed open the door to his room and we  busted out laughing soo hard, OMG …We all went back to sleep, but i told my husband  later, now we know  mommy is not the only one having issues with his snoring. :)

Some days we hear Julian talk to himself, stopping himself from doing things like we would say to him. In a way it is good, this is an indicator he knows  and understands what is expected of him, and well even though he still acts out at times.  So if there are things you won’t want your child to do, or say, things that would embarass you, then avoid doing them or saying infront of your kids.

Happy Friday!

Daycares are not cheap, and for any parents with more than one child  you are talking about paying over $1,000/ month just to have someone watch your kids for around 8-10 hrs/ day. This fee will remain same whether you take your child in or not.  When they get sick 4 out of the 5 days, you still will have to pay that week’s fee.

Then, there is the fact that you have no idea what happens to your child when you leave them at the daycare. You hope and pray that the teacher or caretaker will be loving and caring to your child and not just show that love when you are there.  It is truly difficult when they are just babies, or at the age where they can’t really tell you what happened to them whether it is good or bad.

I know parents always have that inner instinct and you just wonder it means anything or not.  you drop your child off and he or she cries and becomes very clingy, even though this is not entirely an indication of something going wrong, but you still wonder. You go back to pick your child up after work and you find them sitting on a corner by themselves with a sad look on their face, and they spring up and run and jump onto you the minute you walk through the door… Then you keep on wondering, you ask the teachers how your child did for the day and they tell you great…You can’t just ignore that feeling all the time.

So, when you do find a good sitter, someone your children love and are truly happy to see them – Take care of them and reward them sometime.  It doesn’t matter if this person is a teacher,  a friend, or your neighbor’s kid. When you do find a good sitter, it is like ten big chips have been lifted  off your shoulder, it is like peace of mind, and a good day at work , i mean happy you everyday. You do not have to worry  yourself sick about what your child is going through every minute of the day, before you can get to them.

Julian had a not so good sitter at once, it was a teacher in his daycare…I saw all the signs something wasn’t right. I followed my instincts had him switch classes and it was like a whole new child. Come to find out,  all the other teachers new how bad  this teacher  was with kids but of course nothing has ever been done about it. Yeah, i know… Why work with children then!

Funny, when we go to job interviews, the hiring boss asks us so many questions, and will take time to see if one is  a good fit for the company, so many of us parents forget sometime we need to do same thing for our baby sitters. You have to know who you are leaving your child with, get references and have them checked out, if you have any doubt whatsoever, find someone else. They will be caring for your CHILD, you worked so hard, went through so much, to finally hold that child in your arms- I won’t take any chances with just leaving them with just anyone.

So here’s to taking care of our children and their sitters.

This week’s message from Pastor Joel Osteen,

“God’s plan for our lives isn’t dependent on having to be perfect, never making a mistake or never taking a wrong turn. He has grace for every weakness and mercy for every failure. You may have failed a thousand times, but God has not written you off and canceled your destiny. Your mistakes do not disqualify you from God’s plan for your life. He still has a way to get you to your final destination”

Responsibilities of having a baby

Print

Ever heard other parents say, having a baby is not hard, raising a baby  is? Well whoever is saying this  to you is definitely right.  People can give you tons of advice on how to raise your child, but the thing is there is no set fomula. For those who claim they have cared for other people’s children,  trust me, when it is your own child, somehow it is different.  If you are a teenager set to have a child right now,  and  you may have an option to wait a little longer to have a family ?  my advice to you, hold off and think again. The late nights or weekend socials may just put to an end, the moment you have your baby.

So…

  • It can be expensive. Diapers, clothes, fomula, baby food, daycare or babysitting  expenses take a big chunk of your wallet  – These are all  baby essentials.
  •  You have to  feed and  change   baby diapers all day long.
  •  You can’t just come and leave anytime you want, unless you have someone else to watch your baby, and you can’t just leave your baby with just anyone. They have to be responsible adults, a sitter or in a daycare facility. ( That’s not cheap, depending with where you live, a newborn baby can cost upto $250/week on just daycare)
  •  You can’t just sleep anytime you want either, if you are lucky, your baby will get on a sleep schedule, and give you some time to catch on your sleep.
  •  It is your job to keep them healthy, by getting them  any medical attention when needed, make sure they are up to date with their shots, if you vaccinate.  Insurance is not cheap, and yes you will need insurance to get discounts on hospital charges and prescriptions for your baby.
  • If you hate cleaning and doing laundry, think again, as this will be one of your  many daily chores.

I am sure the list can be endless, if you feel you can handle all the above and more, go for it just remember A Baby Changes Everything… but when ready, it is the most wonderful experience. So many great lessons to learn. Every mom or dad has many stories of their own.

17 Lessons from my children.

Have a great week!

Dr Michael Roizen recommends:

You should consume any of the three at the moment you start feeling symptoms. Your options:

  • take 500 milligrams of vitamin C four times each day with plenty of water immediately at the start of cold symptoms and for the next two or three days, or
  • take one zinc lozenge every 6 hours, beginning at the start of cold symptoms and for the next two or three days, or
  • eat a cup of chicken soup four times a day at the onset of symptoms.

I’d be damned…Who knew chicken soup actually does work!

Eli and Julian Eli and Julian

Eli Eli and Julian

So far my boys are doing great. Eli is still going through the teething pains, while big brother Julian thinks that every little thing he can pick up  from the floor needs to go to his brother’s mouth and that it will soothe his painful gums. I should be sleeping already, but am sitting here trying to catch up on my postings. When i look at my children playing, i thank God for health, i thank God for the day, and ask him for many more good days to come.

Some children aren’t so lucky, they are probably in some hospital bed at the moment, or trying to recover from whatever illness they had been suffering, and for their parents it is not an easy time either. We pass each other on the streets, in the grocery stores, or speeding up on the highway etc and we may never have a clue what the other is going through. So yes, when i sit here, knowing that my babies are safely tucked in and sleeping peacefully in their beds tonight, i am thankful. May all the little ones and any  adults out there not feeling well today, get to feeling better soon.

Have a good morning!
