How women live in Africa

Print

I do not have a video, but i can tell you this… For the middle, working class women, most of them are living very comfortable.  When the women and their husbands go to work , they leave their children with a house girl (nanny), and  a personal chauffer may be used at times to drop them off at work and pick them up.

Like Phillipina had commented on my previous post Life is not what you see on TV  most families do have plenty of help compared to what an average family here is stuck doing on their own. You have someone to cook and clean, take care of the lawn, and do grocery shopping for you.

I grew up with 3  live in help. We had someone to take care of the livestock, someone to cook, clean, and  someone who would take workers to the farm.

I was watching on Oprah.com this video about how women lived in Dubai, and it really brought back memories of home- Tanzania, Africa. Most family live close to each other, especially in their home towns. Home for  most family  members would be just down the street, or on the back yard, and just like the woman described in the video Meal times were family times. Everyone can drop in anytime and join in for dinner or lunch.  I find myself doing same thing here, when i have friends over, i cook plenty – a buffet style, all you can eat, and if a friend happen to  just show up and i have no meal prepared yet , i would get in the kitchen and fix them something to eat. I mean this is how women were raised in Africa. You learn from a young age how to cook and care for guests.

This week’s message from Pastor Joel Osteen,

“God’s plan for our lives isn’t dependent on having to be perfect, never making a mistake or never taking a wrong turn. He has grace for every weakness and mercy for every failure. You may have failed a thousand times, but God has not written you off and canceled your destiny. Your mistakes do not disqualify you from God’s plan for your life. He still has a way to get you to your final destination”

Family memories

Print

When i look at my children, i want to remember everything about them, so that is why i keep this blog going. It is easier to write, take photos, or make home videos as keepsakes. I think when they grow up this will be great to have and pass on to their children. I will want to publish some of my entries into a family memoir to pass on to them.  My father used to take  pictures  of us when we were little, and every christmas he would pay for a photographer to take a family portrait,  and i tell you i love looking at those albums.

I don’t know about you, but  there are people in my lives are far gone now, that all am  left with are their memories, and sometime i  sit alone trying to remember their face, and  i can’t seem to find it. I never met my great grandfather, but throughout the years i had heard a lot of stories about him from other members of our family. No one ever took a picture of him, so all i know is who they say he looks like. My great grandmother was around and was believed to have lived to over 100 yrs, but also no one ever took a photo of her, now that i think about, i can’t just believe dad never took her photo.

Great grandma loved telling us tales, every night after dinner we would sit around the fire place and listen to her tell us all sorts of stories, and you could tell she enjoyed it too. I am sitting here wishing we had a video camera back then and just tape the whole thing, that would  have been a great gift not only to myself, but to  our entire family.

Everyone in our lives matters, so try to capture each others memories as much as you can, so when the time comes when they are departed we will  have more things to  remind us of their lives.  All my grandmas are gone now, and  all am left with is a memory…i still remember their warmth, their smiles, their caring ways, and their advice, ooh and their cooking! There was just something about grandma’s cooking, no matter how much i had ate, i still asked for more.

My children have yet to meet my mom, their grandmother, and i just can’t wait till they meet both their grandparents. I am excited for them, and when they do, i will make sure i capture all that in print and video for them, so they can always remember.

The holidays are around the corner,  and most people give each other a lot of gifts, so i challenge you to find away to get together with your extended family, if you are close by, and get family portraits done,  make a home movie,  collect photos of your children and other family members taken throughout the year and make a calendar. All this are great memories that one can’t get enough of for years to come.

Goodnight.

Life is not what you see on TV

Print

I remember growing up watching soap operas on TV and see how the characters would be all glammed up, driving nice cars, living in nice houses and i would think to myself, wow life in USA is great.  Well, there are people here who live that life of luxury, but just like in any other part of the world, it is just a percentage of  the general population that live that good.

Now, for many foreigners in this country, you know trying to explain to people at home that you have your daily struggles here they may not understand. Some would accuse you of having forgotten where you came from, or that you have changed, or some you just don’t want to help the people you left behind anymore. It is hard making  some friends and family understand that here the average family end up living paycheck to paycheck. You spend almost everything you earned on bills,  school, or other essentials to survive, and when you do save it is only a small fraction of what you earn.

On the other hand, there are people that are in the developing countries like for example African countries that are filthy rich. Some parts of Africa too are very developed, most people spend cash  and not live on credit, they own their homes, cars etc, but what is shown on TV here  are the areas that are NOT quite developed. They show the wild, dry, famine-stricken places, but this is not all there is of Africa.  There are  several young entrepreneurs there, educated youth, and  growth in foreign  business investments.  People with mansions of their own, and just doing really great.

So the next time you see a tourist in your African road, don’t just assume they are filthy rich,  and when you do hear your neighbor is from Africa, don’t just assume they lived under a tree or beat up mud house either. For the families left behind by loved ones, realize that living abroad is not as easy as what you watch on Tv, people do work hard, or even harder to keep up with the expenses, so be patient with each other.

Really, one doesn’t need to compare Africa and USA to realize life is not a reality Tv show,  i guess  once put into words it is what it is, heck – just look out your window, you  will see what it truly is.

Good night.

Another great service from my favorite pastor Joel Osteen,

“God’ s hand is outstretched toward us. That means there is a supernatural power behind every believer. As believers, you and I have an advantage. We don’t have to go through life just depending on our own talent, our own ability and our own strength. God’s hand will help us accomplish whatever seems impossible.

When it looks impossible, don’t stay down. Look up and see Gods hand and reach out to Him.

You may be struggling in your finances; stretch out your hand toward that business. Stretch out your hand toward that house you’re trying to sell. Or maybe stretch out your hand toward your checkbook and say, “Father, as an act of my faith, I am stretching out my hand, believing that I am connecting with Your outstretched hand, knowing that right now, You’re releasing supernatural increase, supernatural promotion.” You need to go around talking to yourself, “Father, thank you that Your blessings are chasing me down and overtaking me. Thank you that whatever I touch prospers and succeeds. I know, God, You’re causing me to be at the right place at the right time.” When you do that, that allows God to release what’s in His hands.

Decide to stretch out your hand and get in agreement with God. When our outstretched hands connected with God’s outstretched hand, supernatural things are going to happen.”

Bless Your Enemies – Joel Osteen

Print

You all know this is one of my favorite pastors and i like his teachings a lot. So This is part of his Bless your enemies thought of the day. I wish i had read this in the morning.  I know several people out there can relate to the co-worker portion. Have you just ever worked with someone that at times you just bite your tongue and hope the day is over? So Hope you get the message below from Joe. Stay blessed!

Here’s what Joe wrote

“If somebody is trying to make you look bad by spreading rumors and telling lies, really, they have done you a favor. What they mean for your harm, God is going to use to promote you. I know this to be true because we have never tried to answer our critics. The more they talk, the more God promotes us. The more they talk, the higher we go.

Maybe at the office somebody is trying to make you look bad, talking behind your back, taking things out of context. It’s very tempting to be critical back and think, “Two can play this game. They said this about me. Well, let me tell you what I know about them.” No, don’t sink down to their level. Don’t let their poison cloud your heart. Learn to bless your enemies.

When we know that God is our vindicator and rewards us when we don’t take matters into our own hands, that takes all the pressure off. We don’t have to try to pay people back and get involved in battles that don’t really matter and set the record straight. Let God fight your battles for you. If you will stay on the high road, God will take what others mean for harm, and He will use it to your advantage.

When we learn to bless our enemies and pray for those who persecute us, we keep our heart free from strife and give God more room to bless us, promote us, and speak to us more.

Remember, don’t become weary in doing good. At the proper time, you’ll reap a harvest if you don’t give up. That means, keep doing good to others whenever you’re persecuted. Keep doing the right thing, even when the wrong thing is happening. Keep a good attitude. Keep praying for those who keep talking about you. Before long, you’ll see God’s blessings in greater ways, and what might have seemed like a stumbling block to you, God will use as stepping stone to thrust you higher.”

The symptoms of swine flu are similar to the symptoms of other seasonal types of influenza virus, including:

  • Runny nose
  • Sore throat
  • Body aches
  • Headache
  • Chills
  • Fever
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Sometimes, pneumonia or respiratory failure
  • Worsening of existing physical conditions

People with swine flu might be slightly more likely to experience the gastrointestinal symptoms (vomiting, etc.) than people with the usual forms of the flu.

We as a people were put on this earth for a purpose. I believe Joel Osteen was really sent here to remind  us all of how good God is, and all the answers we search for, all our fears, and when really need it, he reminds us, to always reach out to God as he is able.

Today’s message touched our family big time. Joel thank you, for your work, may God give you the strength and wisdom to keep on comforting us and shining hope in our lives. Amen.

“David said in Psalm 109, “They will curse me, but God, You will bless me.” You may have had a lot of negative things in your past, but your past or even your heredity cannot stop you from God’s destiny because God’s blessing and calling over-rides any curse. You may not be able to choose where you were born or how you were raised, but you can choose to walk in God’s blessing and fulfill your God-given purpose. When you understand God’s blessing over-rides any curse, then you will press forward with a holy determination knowing with full confidence that you will see God’s plan for your life unfold.”

I saw this on yahoo health, Lucy thanks for the info!

Almonds These yummy nuts are high in alpha-linolenic acid, which can accelerate your metabolism of fats. In fact, dieters who ate 3 ounces of almonds daily slashed their weight and body-mass index by 18 percent, while those who skipped the nuts reduced both numbers less— just 11 percent—a study in the International Journal of Obesity revealed. Chomp almonds à la carte (limit yourself to 12 per serving to keep calories in check). I get a pack at Starbucks and nibble throughout my day. Or sprinkle them into a recipe such as Black Bean–Almond Pesto Chicken. Go nuts!

Berries I tell my daughter, “These are nature’s candy!” Turns out they’re also your body’s best friends. Strawberries, raspberries and other vitamin C–spiked fruit can supercharge your workout, helping you burn up to 30 percent more fat, research from Arizona State University at Mesa has found. If they’re not in season, buy the little gems frozen in a bulk-sized bag so you’ll always have them on hand to whip up a Berry Bliss Smoothie or Strawberry-Sunflower Pops,  regardless of whether berries are in season.

Cinnamon Adding 1/4 teaspoon to your plate may prevent an insulin spike—an uptick that tells your body to store fat. Sprinkle it on your morning cereal or coffee or on your yogurt in the A.M., or savor it in Apple-Cinnamon-Raisin Oatmeal.

Mustard It’s heaven on a soft pretzel, but mustard may also be a weight loss wonder. Turmeric, the spice that gives mustard its color, may slow the growth of fat tissues, a study in the journal Endocrinology finds. Use it on sandwiches instead of mayo, or sprinkle turmeric on cauliflower pre-roasting to give it a kick. Try it on tuna salad—I promise it adds zest.

Oranges This citrus fruit, which contains fat-blasting compounds known as flavones, deserves to be your main squeeze. Women who ate the most flavones had a much lower increase in body fat over a 14-year period, a study in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition notes. Eat oranges sliced or swig fresh OJ (including pulp!) to get the best benefit from the fruit.

Soybeans Reason to toss a half cup on your salad? Soybeans are rich in choline, a compound that blocks the absorption of fat and breaks down fatty deposits. Oh, and they’re addictively delish! But if breast cancer runs in your family, experts suggest you should talk to your doc before adding soy to your diet.

Sweet potatoes The colorful spuds’ high-fiber content means they keep your insulin steadier than their white sisters, which means less fat packed on your hips, research finds. Top a small baked tater with lowfat cottage cheese for a tempting side dish, or whip up Miso Soup With Sweet Potato Dumplings.

Swiss cheese Calcium-rich foods reduce fat-producing enzymes and increase fat breakdown, and Swiss has more calcium than many of its cheesy peers. Choose the reduced-fat variety, such as Sargento. Slip it into your sandwich, put it on top of high-fiber crackers or use it for a healthier grilled cheese. Yum!

Joel Osteen We didn’t go to church this Sunday, so my husband watched Joel on TV this morning and recommended i find today’s recording online. It was really good. Read below:

“Life is full of different seasons. There are growing seasons, where we’re seeing increase and promotion and making all kinds of progress and then there are seasons of trials, difficulties and hardships where it seems as if we are taking a step backwards. It may seem so, but it’s during the pruning seasons that God is positioning us for something greater.

If we are going to become everything God has created to be, just as we receive the growing seasons in life, we have to accept the pruning seasons, as well. God will never take something away without putting you in a position to receive something new. What you think may be the worst thing that could have happened could turn out to be one of the best.

When you’re in a slow season and not seeing any growth and it seems as if things important in your life are being taken away, stay in faith; the disappointment and loss wasn’t meant to work against you, but for you. If you will stay in faith, that season will come to an end and you will come into a new season of growth, opportunity and new friendships. You are being pruned for one reason: so you can bloom, so you can blossom, so you can spread your wings and be everything God has created you to be.”
