Rainy Sunday in KC

Print

It  rained most of the day here in Kansas City, but that is ok…The Chiefs won their second game against the Raiders, and yeah without Larry Johnson too!  I was just watching the highlights for the Colts vs Patriots game, man i should have watched that game…Now that is football, when you have the best of the best QB and players truly  bring their A-Game, now that is sports worth watching!

Well, back to mommyhood…  Let’s just say Eli realized mommy was home the whole day and he was going to use that time to his advantage. My little munchkin nursed the whole day, and didn’t take much of a nap, till he crashed at 9:30 pm. I just hope this will be one of those nights i can say, my baby slept through the night!

Julian did so well this weekend too, and am truly proud of him. He  got to show me all the new words he has learned through the week and is becoming quite the master in the concept of sharing… If you are planning on having kids  know this, sharing is a hard thing for children to really learn and practice. I mean, you will be teaching them and reminding them day in day out.  Every toy that is in the house is theirs ” is mine”  as they say it.   Julian has been sharing with us and the baby too, so that is really great.

well, i better go to sleep. goodnight.

Children know a lot more…

Print

Seriously, your children may know and understand nore about you and things around  than you realize. Julian wakes up early every morning some days around 5:30, usually he will jump in our  bed with us and if Eli is in our bed then and not in his crib, his dad would take Julian back to his room and most times  he would  fall asleep in Julian’s bed till they wake up again.

This morning Julian came to our room asked for milk. His dad woke up  with him, but they went back to  his room. I walked down the hall way trying to burp Eli  and i hear them chat and then there was silence and i hear Julian start making thing sounds aloud aaaaarrr huuuuh aaaarrrr huuuuuh aaaaarrrr huuuuh…Then it hit me, his dad snores,  he was imitating his dad, i guess he was expecting his dad to start snoring soon.  I pushed open the door to his room and we  busted out laughing soo hard, OMG …We all went back to sleep, but i told my husband  later, now we know  mommy is not the only one having issues with his snoring. :)

Some days we hear Julian talk to himself, stopping himself from doing things like we would say to him. In a way it is good, this is an indicator he knows  and understands what is expected of him, and well even though he still acts out at times.  So if there are things you won’t want your child to do, or say, things that would embarass you, then avoid doing them or saying infront of your kids.

Happy Friday!

Daycares are not cheap, and for any parents with more than one child  you are talking about paying over $1,000/ month just to have someone watch your kids for around 8-10 hrs/ day. This fee will remain same whether you take your child in or not.  When they get sick 4 out of the 5 days, you still will have to pay that week’s fee.

Then, there is the fact that you have no idea what happens to your child when you leave them at the daycare. You hope and pray that the teacher or caretaker will be loving and caring to your child and not just show that love when you are there.  It is truly difficult when they are just babies, or at the age where they can’t really tell you what happened to them whether it is good or bad.

I know parents always have that inner instinct and you just wonder it means anything or not.  you drop your child off and he or she cries and becomes very clingy, even though this is not entirely an indication of something going wrong, but you still wonder. You go back to pick your child up after work and you find them sitting on a corner by themselves with a sad look on their face, and they spring up and run and jump onto you the minute you walk through the door… Then you keep on wondering, you ask the teachers how your child did for the day and they tell you great…You can’t just ignore that feeling all the time.

So, when you do find a good sitter, someone your children love and are truly happy to see them – Take care of them and reward them sometime.  It doesn’t matter if this person is a teacher,  a friend, or your neighbor’s kid. When you do find a good sitter, it is like ten big chips have been lifted  off your shoulder, it is like peace of mind, and a good day at work , i mean happy you everyday. You do not have to worry  yourself sick about what your child is going through every minute of the day, before you can get to them.

Julian had a not so good sitter at once, it was a teacher in his daycare…I saw all the signs something wasn’t right. I followed my instincts had him switch classes and it was like a whole new child. Come to find out,  all the other teachers new how bad  this teacher  was with kids but of course nothing has ever been done about it. Yeah, i know… Why work with children then!

Funny, when we go to job interviews, the hiring boss asks us so many questions, and will take time to see if one is  a good fit for the company, so many of us parents forget sometime we need to do same thing for our baby sitters. You have to know who you are leaving your child with, get references and have them checked out, if you have any doubt whatsoever, find someone else. They will be caring for your CHILD, you worked so hard, went through so much, to finally hold that child in your arms- I won’t take any chances with just leaving them with just anyone.

So here’s to taking care of our children and their sitters.

Eli

Eli had his first hair cut this weekend. You know how babies lose their hair all different places in their head as they rub against their beds, or their seats. It was time for him to get a cut.

I am still exclusively breastfeeding him and i plan to continue for at least 2 years. I  look at him now, all innocent, and i hope he remains that way. He is sleeping  right now and so is his brother Julian.

Now all mama hopes for is another  good night sleep.

Good night or good morning to you.

How women live in Africa

Print

I do not have a video, but i can tell you this… For the middle, working class women, most of them are living very comfortable.  When the women and their husbands go to work , they leave their children with a house girl (nanny), and  a personal chauffer may be used at times to drop them off at work and pick them up.

Like Phillipina had commented on my previous post Life is not what you see on TV  most families do have plenty of help compared to what an average family here is stuck doing on their own. You have someone to cook and clean, take care of the lawn, and do grocery shopping for you.

I grew up with 3  live in help. We had someone to take care of the livestock, someone to cook, clean, and  someone who would take workers to the farm.

I was watching on Oprah.com this video about how women lived in Dubai, and it really brought back memories of home- Tanzania, Africa. Most family live close to each other, especially in their home towns. Home for  most family  members would be just down the street, or on the back yard, and just like the woman described in the video Meal times were family times. Everyone can drop in anytime and join in for dinner or lunch.  I find myself doing same thing here, when i have friends over, i cook plenty – a buffet style, all you can eat, and if a friend happen to  just show up and i have no meal prepared yet , i would get in the kitchen and fix them something to eat. I mean this is how women were raised in Africa. You learn from a young age how to cook and care for guests.

Here’ s that Video on Oprah..http://www.oprah.com/media/20091021-tows-dubai

How to clean the baby’s gums

Print

Just like older kids or adults need their teeth cared for, so do the baby’s gums. The best way to clean the baby’s gums is using wet wash cloth with water. Just wet the cloth and wrap around your finger and wipe the baby’s gums , tongue and upper walls of the mouth, and voila.. baby’s mouth is clean!

Bye Bye Weekend, hello Monday!

Print

This weekend was pretty busy for us, but it all went fine.  Eli turned 5 months old on Sunday, and i can’t believe it is already 5 months since i had him. We had him  dedicated at Sheffield Family Life Center , and the service was  just great.  My husband and I are both Christians , i was raised catholic, and in the catholic church baby baptism is a  big deal.  So we were both glad we got to have Eli dedicated this Sunday. Later on we had one family over for dinner,  and it was lovely.

I love weekends because i get to spend time with my family. Eli is really trying to imitate Julian,  he is reaching out to him, grabbing on his hands, and at times reaching out wanting Julian to carry him. Julian just laughs at him and thinks it is the coolest thing ever.   I got to talk to my parents in Tanzania  too, and they were both doing great, i really miss them. Dad told My husband that if all goes as planned he will be coming to visit us here, if he really does come this will be awesome.

Eli was running a mild fever over the weekend and we had been giving him some Tylenol. This morning he woke up with about 99.2 fever, i think it was due to the teething, but when  i called Children Mercy nurse’s line   the nurse wanted him checked just to rule out anything serious. We went in and Dr said to keep an eye on him if he still has it within the next 48 hrs she would have his blood tested, so so far he is ok.

This swine flu has everyone really nervous, anytime you complain about any kind of body aches,  people fear you have it.

So Monday is here and it is work as usual. I get to go to my cardio conditioning at 4:30P . Last week i lost 3 lbs, which is absolute awesome.  This week i plan on working out 5 days, last week i worked out for 3 days, so we will see how i do.

Enough yapping, Have a good work week!

It has been a really busy week for me, but all worth it. Today i went for cardio training, and man oh men this trainer was good. She had us dripping in sweat, just what this mama needs here.  Julian and Eli are both doing great. Julian is learning math, and i need to find an easy way to teach him… I think so far he is just memorizing the answers,  instead of getting the actual concept of the addition and substraction.  I went to school in Kenya, so we used to have little sticks all laid on the floor and the teacher would make you count your sticks so you can figure out your calculations…I need to come up with something along those lines to help Julian.

Eli is still going through teething woes. He actually rolled over for us yesterday for the first time.  I am so glad both my husband and i were standing right there when it happened, i won’t want to miss that :) You could just tell from that look on his face, it was quite an accomplishment. What this means, we will not leave this boy unattended on any raised surface!

I am getting ready to head home now, i have done my time at work, and ready to embrace the weekend.  I am hoping  to catch a movie tonight with my husband, if Eli allows, and i want to wake up early Saturday and spend some time with Julian, so daddy can sleep in.

Hey, enjoy your weekend and spend some time with your loved ones!

Fort Hood shooter’s photo

Major Nidal Hasan, the U.S. Army doctor identified as a suspect ...

This is the picture released for Major Nidal Hasan, the U.S. Army Psychiatrist that shot and killed 12 men and wounded 31 others today at the army base Fort Hood, Texas.  According to yahoo news, this man was against the war in Iraq and Afghanistan. He had wanted the President to pull the soldiers from this 2 countries, and today he just lost it.

He is still alive.

What is really troubling here is, all this men couldn’t defend themselves, i mean they have no reason to carry guns around on base. They only use their guns during training. This is very sad. Families get worried when their loved ones get deployed overseas, when  they are still in the country at least you have peace. How do you call someone’s wife, mother, husband and tell them their fellow army man, who is supposed to protect them, who took an oath to fight for the country, just shot and killed them!

This is is hard to take in.  Peace to all.

Losing the baby weight…

Print

So winter is on the way,  and i find myself still not able to fit on  some of my jeans. I  have refused to buy any new clothes, mmmh can’t do it. So I took a good look at myself in  the mirror this week,  and i didn’t feel any motivation to go to the gym all by myself. My husbad would tell me, if you want to go just go, i will watch the kids, mmmh didn’t feel like it. So i told myself, maybe i could do the walking thing, but  It is getting cold now, so walking or jogging around the park didn’t appeal to me.  My poor husband was never tired of telling me how great i still looked, even though i don’t really agree with him, lol.  So what did i do then?

Mama is kicking it with  trainers, and  for free too!  Yep. I am fortunate enough to work for a company that has a gym with state of the art equipment and  great  trainers. So finally, i joined and started yesterday with Cardio, today i did Yoga sculpt and tomorrow am back to cardio.  I mean this is exactly what i needed. I get to take this classes during my one hour lunch at work , we have showers  in the gym, so i get to clean up and go back to work afterwards.  So,  now there is no excuse for me not to get  back in shape, i mean it can never get better than this.

I pump at home before i leave for work, and then pump  during my 2 breaks, so i am still able to get the baby’s food, only now am able to do something for myself as well.  My body is sore, but i feel so energetic, i came back from work last night all pumped up full of energy, my husband woke up this morning and went to the gym! Yay for us!

I have no excuse right now not to do this, i mean  it can’t get easier than this, so i will  work out all next week and will share with you all how much i have shed so far.

So, here’s to good health, motivation, and kissing those pounds good-bye!
