Time flies

mommy and Eli

Eli- Read to me mommy Eli i can play too

It is almost 6 months since i had Eli. Time does really fly. Eli has been a wonderful, happy baby so far, and am truly grateful for him. Julian and Eli still get along, and so far Eli has been Julian’s best play mate. Julian sneaks in Eli’s room and wakes him up so they can play together, so naptimes have been tough. Both boys are sleeping right now and yes it is wonderful to sit here and write about it without any interruptions.

I just watched Joel Osteen’s message for today on TV , following the Soul Train awards about “ Redeeming The Time” and i got to tell you it was great..as usual! He was talking about how crucial it is to make the most of your day instead of dwelling on negativity. Life is a gift and today is a present. It truly does take so much energy staying mad at anyone and going to bed mad is not a great way to end your day. So am with Joel on this. “ When you fully understand the value of your time and see each day as a gift, it helps you keep the right perspective. As you do, you will live life more intentional, making the most of every opportunity.” He also talked about how you shouldn’t waste your time trying to figure out why you lost some of your friends or even for that matter trying to waste your energy impressing people that don’t really appreciate you. God will bring people in your life that truly deserve you!

As far as time and life… I am grateful for my children and my family. For the friends that i do have, they are a bonus, so if they were to decide to stop being friends with me, it will be disappointing but i have to believe things do happen for a reason, and yes  i would definitely move on. Life is too short, plus when you have your own family to look after, you definitely don’t want to waste your energy on distractions.

So, go out there and be positive and enjoy your day today. Remember time flies, it will be tomorrow in no time, and when you  do go to bed tonight, think about what you would have accomplished today and plan to do so the next day.

Enjoy and goodnight!

Do you have a true friend?

Print

Sometime in life you can only depend on yourself and your immediate family for real support. Many times we let each other down or are first to judge, doubt others or even  mistake their intentions. You can easily see this, If you ever find yourself in a bind, see who will come to your rescue and i guarantee you those are your true friends and confidantes. It is funny when some friends hear you have hit a rough patch  and they  are quick to  dissappear and fast to spread all kind of rumors.  You may not even need their help,  or whatever your situation, there is no way they can even help you out , but somehow they just assume, you are going to ask them for God knows what and they just dissappear.

Well, c’est la vie! It is life! It is all part of rediscovering yourself and the people you surround yourself with.  I am the type of person if someone needed help and came to me, i would gladly help them out and keep it to myself. I think that is the right thing to do, and if a friend confides in me with a secret, i just keep it that way- a secret.  Now, i know a handful of people that won’t do the same. I have had calls where people will tell me all sorts of things that people i know are going through, and they would add ” could you please not  tell anyone, because so-so asked that i keep it a secret, but am just telling you”. Gossip. Jeez, sometime I wonder whether people really think through what they are going to say, or just take sometime to listen to themselves before they open their mouths.

I grew up in Tanzania-Africa, surrounded by lots of family.  I remember seeing other moms and just some members of our family just coming to talk to my mom about what they were going through.  We would have worked 10+ hours a day at the shop and you could tell my brother and i were just about ready to go home, but my mom would patiently stand there and listen to whoever that  showed up there that day and just talk to them. Most of the time she would end up  giving them a bag of groceries, corn, beans or potatoes. Never would my mom ever tell any of us what that person ever said to her.  She always used to say never let anyone go to bed hungry, it is just food.  Back then, i never really thought anything of it, but  truly her actions taught me a lot about  how to treat others, regardless of their walk of life.

How many times would you pay a full price of an item at a stranger’s shop but would refuse to go to your friend’s because he or she won’t give you that item for free or at a discount? I know , ridiculous concept, huh. You will be amazed how even some family members would rather take their business elsewhere instead of  family because somehow they think they are entitled  most of it free or if they do give you their business they would be benefitting you too much. What is it they say.. I am not going to make them rich while they sit there?.  I know. I know. Not everyone is like that, but try to open your own business and see how many people you know will be supportive.

So if you are out there and are going through  some ups and downs for one reason or another, stay strong that too shall pass. Remember, when one door closes another opens.  If you just went into business for yourself, look further, beyond the people you know, you will be surprised  to find that people don’t have to know you to need your services or goods.  For the friends and family stay positive, be there for each other, don’t be quick to judge and bring others down, Remember one day you may be up, but the next you may be down. It is part of life’s journey, so treat others like you would want to be treated.

Your baby and Music

Print

Ever hear of pregnant mothers putting headphones around their bellies and letting their unborn child listen to their favorite music? Yep. I was that kind of mom. I know experts believe an unborn child can still hear through the amniotic fluid, even music playing on the background on your sterio and you may not necessarily have to put a headphone on your belly, or play music very loud either, but i still put a headphone on my belly while i worked during the day.

Experts do warn though don’t play for too long so you do not overstimulate your baby, they recommend playing about one hour straight then give the baby a break.

Most of us adults do enjoy unwinding down with our favorite songs, especially after a long busy day. You can imagine the relaxation you feel and some days your mind become so relaxed that you fall right to sleep. So, if  music can have that effect on adults, imagine what it can do to children.

I am a firm believer of introducing babies to music from 0- adulthood. Classical, soft R& B, gospel, and of course our African Tunes are a favorite in our home.  Julian is 3 1/2 years old  and is so used to sleeping with his classical music  that when we put him to bed and forget to turn the CD on he would ask for it.

I am not sure whether classical music really make your children smarter, but i believe it does stimulate their brains.  Some experts believe children that play an instrument become very good in math and reasoning skills, so that’s just something else for parents to consider.

So when do you really want to play music for your child? Just about anytime. Turn off the TV sometime during the day and put in a children’s CD for them to sing along, or even play your own favorite music and dance along with your children  and with time, you may hear them sing along and master  the lyrics.

While pregnant the boys listened to a lot of music, this year Beyonce’s Ave Maria was one of my favorites. Eli and I listened to that song at least once a day, then the rest was a mix of just about anything mama wanted.

So play some music today, and let your baby enjoy too.

Sunday’s game between the Chiefs and the Steelers was the GAME to watch! Wow i still can’t belive the Chiefs beat the SB champions! I bet the Steelers are still thinking that was a prank. So The Chiefs CAN actually play? I mean, i  want to rewind this whole season and want them to start all over again, of course starting last Sunday, lol.

Yeah.. I know am not the only fan saying this now…Who is Larry Johnson?  when you have Jamal Charles bringing it! Bowe was suspended, but his replacement – Chambers didn’t dissappoint.

Hey I love football, i am just telling it as it is. So to the coach, keep on doing what you are doing, i don’t care whether you didn’t play football or not, this Sunday was the best time spent watching the team play. I hope this is the beginning, no more hopeless plays.

Good Job, KC Chiefs! Go Chiefs!

….Did anyone watch soccer championship last night? I just caught the last 10 min as i was watching the AMA awards… Oh man, i felt so sorry for Beckham. He played through all the pain, and only for his team members to lose on the penalty kicks! Oh well, David you played well, there’s always another season!

Happy Monday!

Julian-upcoming filmaker Julian-upcoming filmaker

Julian has really picked on some of his father’s hobbies. He surprised us this week, by going into the storage closet getting his dad’s tripod then he set it up all by himself,  and turned around and  asked for the small camera. His dad set the camera for him and showed him how to use it, and now it has been one of  his new activities.

As parents, sometime we see so much of ourselves in our children. There are  little pieces of  me that i see in both Julian and Eli, same thing with their dad. It is like your looking at yourself in a small mirror, so that is why it is so important for both parents to take some time off and just spend with their children. I know we can get so busy with life and just let other people  raise our kids for us, but it is still critical to take time off and just get to know your children.

Both boys are sleeping right now, i better get some sleep myself, so i can get the family up and ready tomorrow morning for church.

Have a goodnight.

What is Thanksgiving?

Print

Thanksgiving  is basically a harvest festival celebrated mainly in Canada and USA.  It originated with the pilgrims when they had a feast marking their first harvest. It  is a  time for people to give thanks to God for everything.   Canadians celebrate Thanksgiving the second Monday of October while Americans cebrate the 4th Thursday  of November. During this time families get together and enjoy  a feast  together,  and on the menu of course is Turkey.

So Thanksgiving is next week and i will be cooking. Here’s what’s on our Thanksgiving menu:

Turkey and stuffing
Mashed potatoes and gravy
corn on the cob
Rice Pilau
Chapati
Dairy Free Green Bean Casserole
Pumpkin Pie and  strawberry – kiwi fruit pie
African Salad (Kachumbari) and fruit salad
and of course cranberry sauce

I know for a fact  i am going to pig out this thanksgiving!  All the pounds i have lost so far will come right back up and am ok with that.

Hope you will get to celebrate this thanksgiving with your loved ones.

Happy Friday!

For Oprah, this just means- she is just getting started! Well Oprah, i know you don’t believe in luck, but i will still wish you lots of it. I am sure anything you touch turns out to be  gold and this new venture is just going to be a success!

I think we should start a campaign  with the slogan – who wants to work for Oprah? I  am in. :)

More Reasons to drink Water…

Print

Are you getting enough water? I am not talking about sodas, juice, tea or coffee, just plain water. Our bodies are made of about 60% water, so as the days go by we lose  the water in our bodies and naturally we will need to replenish that.  I was really bad about drinking water,i think i started drinking water when i got pregnant, and that was to get rid of that yucky taste in my mouth. I would add a freshly squeezed lemon and little did i know, i was drinking water throughout the day.

Experts recommend drinking at least 8 – 8oz glasses of water a day, and actually others are saying depending with how much you exercise and other health factors you may need more than 8 glasses a day.  So why do you need to drink water ?

  • Water helps your body get rid of toxins and waste through your digestive tract.
  • Water helps you with digestion and absorbing helpful nutrients in your body
  • Helps you burn fat, yep.  Helps raise the oxygen levels in your bloodstream, so you body can use that up to burn fat  for energy
  • Keeps you energized throughout the day. The more water you have in your body, the less fatigue you will feel in the day.
  • Water will keep you alive; i mean you can’t go on without it.
  • Have a headache? Drink water,  it works same thing for joint pains
  • Plus helps with your short term memory.

There are tons of benefits of why you should drink water and if you are the type that can’t seem to drink just plain water…add  freshly sliced limes, lemons or oranges for taste and  just drink on.

If you want to know if you are drinking enough water… check out  the color of your urine. If it is clear, you are drinking too much water, cut a little bit. If it is pale yellow you are on the right track, but if it is dark then you aren’t getting enough water and start drinking a little more.

Goodnight and have a glass of water.
