Get Your Vitamin D…

Print

Are your kids getting enough Vitamin D?

I didn’t understand the ramifications of not getting enough Vitamin D till our pediatrician started explaining to us how they are seeing a lot of kids having all sorts of issues including Rickets.

If your kids are not in the sun for at least 10-15min a day and at least twice that much for dark skinned kids and are not given a Vitamin D supplement, Then they are not getting enough Vitamin D, and could be deficient.

When the pediatrician learned that i would be exclusively breastfeeding my son, she wanted us to get him on the Trivisol vitamins right away. Breast milk contains enough calcium, but you would need to supplement for the Vitamin D. My Dr reminded me as well that now that am breastfeeding, i needed to continue taking my – prenatals vitamins for as long as i breastfeed.  personally, i am also taking a DHA supplement as well- I was on the Expecta Lipil ( non-fish base) …By the way CVS sometime have deals on their store brand DHA supplement 2 for the price of 1, can’t beat that.

With us women, as we age we need to maintain our calcium/D levels, so if you are not on a multivitamin, at least use a calcium/D supplement daily. I was reading this article about Vitamin D on CNN Health, Researchers were saying ..Adults can get low on vitamin D as well, you are talking about risk of getting diabetes, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, and a lot of cancers, and when kids start out with low levels and never increase them, they may be at risk for developing all of these diseases at a much earlier age.

Julian is on the flintstones Gummies at the moment, i give him 1 gummy a day. Eli is on the Trivisol vitamin solution and i give him 1ML / day. This summer Julian spent a lot of time outdoors especially in the morning hours before noon. Vitamin D is only made if we are in the sunlight (Unprotected) for at least 15min, so if you know you are always indoors then get yourself a good supplement, and i would recommend one that has calcium/VitaminD as you need the Calcium to absorb the Vitamin D. Of course, take with food for better absorption.

The recommended daily amount of D is 400 IU.

Let’s stay healthy as much as we can.

Sensitive skin…

Print

I  am not talking about allergies though.. there are some kids who have very sensitive skin. The ones that you touch certain things and touch them they turn red on the spot or break out. The type that when you buy new clothes and put them on them without washing first they break out due to the dyes in the fabrics.

Julian used to be this baby, but of course has outgrown that now…

Dreft soap is said to be very gentle for babies but it didn’t work for our son because it has that perfume, that baby  sweet smelling perfume, but not to our sensitive munchkin. So that is when we discovered the free and clear laundry soaps.

Anything that said free and clear of dyes and perfumes truly works for anyone with sensitive skin. I have been using Purex and All free and clear for the entire family. Oxi clean makes a good stain remover as well that is free and clear of dyes and perfumes.

Also pay attention to the bathing soaps and lotions… stick with hypoallergenic products. Most pediatricians recommend hypoallergenic products for babies, as i mean most babies skin is very sensitive and one mistake can cause you a weeks long headache.

Take care of your loved ones, and stay blessed!

The Hospital bag essentials

Print

I remember when i had Julian I was so confused as to what to pack, i left out things that i wish i had packed…Hey and forget about asking your husband to do it for you, or ask him to bring you clothes.. you do not want to know what he brought me. ..lol..

So are you expecting, baby coming soon and have no clue what you need to pack?.. here are some things that came in handy for me .

Toothbrush and toothpaste, your favorite soap and shampoo (though hospital provides soap),  lotion or body cream, deodorant, lipgloss , flip flops to wear in the shower, your favorite toiletries ( hospital provides)..  some sort of entertainment: Ipod/music, DVDs/Movies, magazine, a book etc., cell phone and charger,  list of numbers to call  e.g  Work contact

snacks or change for the snack machine, this will be probably for your husband.

A rob to go over the hospital gown ( when you have to walk).. some people bring their gowns, but i didn’t i figured why soil mine while the hospital was providing theirs free, and you could change them as needed.

Definitely socks to keep your feet warm- bring  2-3 pairs, sleepers/house shoes, or anything you can slip into without having to bend down … it is the last thing you would like to do after the baby.

Hair band, comfortable nursing bra or regular bra, nipple cream if you will be nursing ( my hospital gave me some),  going home outfit (keep in mind you will still look like 5 months pregnant), thank you cards for the hospital staff.

For the baby : car seat, going home outfit (with hat ), receiving blanket.

Do not bring : jewelry- they make you take that off for C-section, medications – talk to your Dr first , and breast pump — i brought mine and did not need it.

Also  bring a Camera or camcorder to capture everything.

What is an EpiPen?

Print

I get this question a lot when i tell people that we carry one for our son Julian.

An EpiPen is an auto-injector prescribed to patients with severe, life threatening allergies.  People who if they would encounter one of the allergens they would get anaphylaxis (life threatening reaction ).

An EpiPen buys you time to live. It buys you time to get the patient to the nearest hospital. Even if there is no longer a reaction, you are always suppose to go to the Emergency Room once an EpiPen has been injected. You typically inject it on the thigh of the patient and hold it for about 15-20 seconds for the medication to be absorbed.  The reason why you go to the hospital is there can be other side effects with it and doctors would have to monitor those levels.

The day we used the Epipen on Julian was for an allergen we did not even know he  had. His EpiPen was prescribed for Peanuts and Milk. my husband and i  were having dinner  at home. I had cooked Tilapia fish and cut a little piece and fed it to Julian. He didn’t even want it…he was such a picky eater, and always has been. What was mama to do, i fed  him anyway. all of a sudden i hear him gulping for breath, his throat started closing on him, and all i could hear is this sound as if he was chocking, but i knew he wasn’t cause that piece  i fed him was ‘mashed’ and he had already swallowed it.  Then he started swelling, i jumped off the table, shaking and screaming reached out for the EpiPen and i froze! I screamed to my husband … i have forgotten how to use the EpiPen..

He was calm, he took Julian and looked at me and said, you know how to use it, Do it, Sophia! I opened the case and took out the  top, and pulled his PJs and injected him on the thigh. I held it there more than 40sec…I know it worked because, all of a sudden he was breathing again, Of all the things he could have done at that moment … he didn’t, he just smiled and reached out for me. He could have cried, but he didn’t. We took his diaper bag, and the car keys and headed to the Children’s Mercy Urgent care. We took that used EpiPen with us and gave the attending Doctor to dispose.

They monitored him for about 2 hours , the entire time he was playing there, basically he was fine.

So I know the importance of EpiPens and the fact that they really do work.. They save lives.  I always have an Epipen in my purse. He has one in his diaper bag, and we have a pack of 2 at home in the medicine cabinet.

So anytime i read news on people dying because of exposure to allergies, i worry… I worry a lot because it can happen! You can lose people you love in a matter of seconds. No one in our immediate family has the food allergies that our son has.. maybe in earlier generations, but people didn’t keep that medical history. But what do we do now?

Educate , educate , always on the look out…. we never assume. We always double check ingredients on labels, we bring our own snacks and meals at times. We ask before we eat, and we always let  everyone around know what Julian can or cannot have. We do not leave him with just anyone, when we do…we know he is clear of exposure. He is 3 years old..we can control this because he is still under our care, when he starts school and grows up and he is on his own, we don’t know, but we hope we would have prepared him enough.

So, if someone ever tells you they are allergic to something, please help them avoid exposure, you can help them live little longer.

Stay Blessed!

Finally a quiet home…

Print

It is almost 7pm, Eli,Julian and daddy are all asleep. I don’t work on weekends, so i got to spend some time with my family. Eli was so excited to see me, he didn’t want daddy today but mommy, lol. I think daddy needed his break today too. He doesa good job during the week. He has figured out his own routine as well…

I have the whole kitchen and living room to myself right now. . I am tired i should be taking a nap before Eli calls, but i won’t. I have so much to do. I need to fold some laundry, then cook some chapatis and stew for my brother in law , Lug. He broke his ankle while jogging… and standing on his feet for too long isn’t such a good idea.

Today was a good day overall. I  was able to give Julian his bath, play on the computer with him, and read him his favorite book of the month…Green eggs and Ham by Dr Seuss.. uniterrupted! This doesn’t happen that often, but am glad we got our time.

During the week i read to both Julian and Eli while nursing Eli in the morning. It has now stuck to a routine and they tend to expect this daily, which is pretty good. Julian gets to sit beside me and listen. He is a great helper too, he talks to the baby, sings to the baby and teach him some words. It is funny watching him do it.

I better go get to the cooking,  and some chores…stay blessed!

Breastfeeding basics

Print

If you have to choose between bottle feeding and breast feeding , breast feeding should be your # 1 choice. I believe you will be giving your baby a good start in life.  I understand it is not easy the first few days, it is very easy to want to give up, seriously. Getting the baby to latch on in the beginning wasn’t easy. Remember you are pretty much teaching them, and trying to find a good position/ balance.  Some people choose to exclusively pump instead, and that is ok.

I pump at work and at home if  the baby is sleeping and  when am too full. I find pumping has really boost my supply. Remember the rule of supply and demand works in milk making. The more the you feed/pump the more your body makes.

To help boost my supply, i eat oatmeal and when i take a nap, i wake up full, so rest as much as you can ( though it is hard finding that time). I drink lots of water for hydration throughout the day.

Some people swear by these things  : fenugreek , blessed thistle, some blends like Mother’s Love More Milk Plus, the prescription drug Reglan can also help increase your milk supply – yes it is perfectly ok for your baby.

Appreciation…

Print

As I grow older, i tend to appreciate more of life. I appreciate my parents, brothers and sister for being there for me, through it all. I appreciate the sucrifices that my parents had to give up for me to be where i am. Be healthy, have an education, and have  my own family.

My mother didn’t get to finish high school, get a GED or go to college, but she is the smartest woman in my life. She is the kindest, most generous and every one that has ever met her feels like they have known her all her life. She always makes everyone feel at home. She taught me a lot, just through her actions. I can count the number of times my mom ever raised her voice at me. And for that and many more, i appreciate her.

I don’t get to talk to her every day, sometimes i go weeks then once i went a whole month without calling her. Not because i didn’t want to, because you get so sucked up with the daily life and routines that you don’t realize it has been that long… but i love her. I always start our conversation with an apology just for not talking to her for X amount of times. I call her every week now, i try to. every saturday or Sunday  i get my mommy talk with my mama.

Let us learn to appreciate the people in our lives and take time to check on them every once in a while.

My dad is always on the go, always busy.. very hardworking. He stopped at high school, but that man is a true entrepreneur. He has done very well by himself and am very proud of him. He taught me there  is no difference between girls and boys in terms of what you can achieve in life. He worked me as hard as my 4 brothers. We always had to earn our keep, i think. This mentality prepared me more than i could imagine,  and am glad he never just handed me everything on a platter.  I look at my boys and wonder where they will be at 30 years. I hope they will make something out for themselves.

My older brother has his own family, he is my security blanket. No matter what bind i got myself into, i always knew i can call him up and he will help me out. My little brothers amaze me every day at how smart they have grown to be, how well they are doing in school. One of them is already a business owner at 25, so  pride is all i can say  i have for him.

They always say, every family has one of those troubled souls… we have one of those. my brother Dennis. He has gotten himself in every kind of trouble that you could ever imagine. Let’s just say, trouble. . He never causes trouble for anyone outside the family… just mostly his own dad. The funny thing i always thought he was his favorite kid while growing up. He  is identical to my dad, literally , they look alike. He always got what he wanted as a kid…so i am not sure what happened, but  oh well… i still love him.

My baby sister Prolimina… She is smart, wise, and lovable. She is confused as to what school she should go to. I will be calling her soon to help her out. I think the sky is the limit for her. She could read and write at 2 1/2years old.

Both my grandmothers have passed away, but when they were around they loved me, loved all of us. They had a way of making all of us feel so special around them. Their meals were delicious , no matter what they cooked. I missed the smell of their cooking, their smiles, and the way they hugged. I appreciate all the memories  of my childhood with them, i think that was the best gift of all.

My grandpa, (dad’s) is still around but since loosing grandma he kinds lost it. He turned out to heavy drinking, and boy he loves that konyagi.  that is pretty much his cup of coffee. Forget about lunch who needs it when there is beer and konyagi.  He still plays a major part in all our lives, it hurts that it feels like he is just flashing his life away. He is the oldest in  our entire family. I wish he would realize that and honor that , but again we can only hope.

My husband and my boys, my brothers and sister, plus the whole family and my friends do indeed complete me. For them i am truly grateful for their presence in my life. So i appreciate all of you. Be blessed!

Bye bye Cradle cap…..

Thank God for Gentle Naturals Baby Cradle Cap Treatment

I used this one time and oh my , oh me.. lol It worked. All i had to do is apply that all over his scalp, and brush out the flakes and then shampoo with baby shampoo.  For the face i used  their Gentle Naturals Baby Eczema Cream and you can tell a difference, major difference on my son’s skin.

I am starting to question whether  this is truly eczema or it was severe case of cradle cap all along. Whatever the case, i am using this products and i plan to stand by them.

I read somewhere that the cradle cap treatment worked within a day, and  i couldn’t believe that it was possible, BUT… i guess it is possible. I plan on using that for a couple more times… i guess it won’t hurt.

Hopefully if there is someone somewhere having this trouble they can try this out.

Nose Bleeds

Print

So Julian has been having this nose bleeds at night…apparently it is getting dry and he is rubbing his nose and eventually causing his nose to bleed. What his Dr suggested is applying vaseline in his nose before bed or using saline drops. We decided to use the vaseline and that worked like a charm.

Just a tip …

Eli has a rash…

Print

Dang! I tthought i was past exczema after dealing with IT for 2 years with Julian. Man it wasn’t easy… i tell you, when your kid can’t sleep at night without mittens in his hands, then as he gets older, that stops working because, he pulls everything off his tiny fingers…then you wake up one morning and you tell yourself. We beat it! His skin is as smooth as it can be. No more rashes, no more itchiness ( which by the way was the hardest) and finally sleeping through the night.

So Eli has had this rash. It is itchy, so we know this road, we have travelled this way a lot… but also he has cradle cap  that  i am having to oil his scalp and  brush it off. Right now it is on the face. So i am giving him a break by staying away from of course anything dairy, soy , wheat and eggs… It sucks yes, but i would rather give that up than seeing my son suffer. This is just as a test, then i will add everything back on my diet, one by one and observe. Though i already know, we can’t do fish or milk.

I used foltabs vitamins with DHA.. that DHA was fish based, he broke out in rash on the back and neck and chest… we know , we can’t have that anymore. Milk.. i had  cream cheese with my bagel, and cake covered with cream based topping.. and yes the rash again.

Yes.. i pay attention to what i eat, i already went through all this with Julian. So i guess, am more aware, i won’t call it smarter… but yeah not bad for a mom.

When you are a mother / parent, you give up the me me me mentality for ‘my baby’ this and that. You bore people with baby talk. co-workers, friends , family and  strangers. The babyism….Hey a piece of advice  though not everyone cares to hear what our babies did, really. LOL but i understand, you can’t help it.

….So far we re using Cerave cleanser on Eli and aquophor ointment. We will see how this works.

I can’t wait till it is gone though… it sucks!
